Carr Struggles, Takes Sixth, Maintains Slim Point Lead.

Friday night in Springfield, at a brand new facility added to the sprawling Illinois State Fairgrounds, the AMA regulars twisted the throttles on their 600s and raced on a short track about the same size as the Daytona stadium track. Chris struggled a bit all night, although he did manage to make some daring and seemingly impossible passes to win his heat, giving Carr fans some hope that he could be at the front come main event time.

It wasn't to be however, and Chris had to settle for a mediocre (for him) sixth place, fighting the bike and traction all through the race. It was a supremely determined ride just to hang on to that position.

A disappointed Chris Carr put it this way:.

"Well, one of them things. The track changed a little bit on us. They kept digging it up, and the rougher the track got, the worse my bike worked. We made some changes trying to anticipate that in the main event and it just didn't seem to work. That's the way it goes sometimes on the short tracks. Hey, there's always tomorrow. And the next day."
