Rain Cancels Second 2001 Hagerstown Event

For the second time in 2001, rain delayed the program at Hagerstown, Maryland. Earlier this summer, the program was rescheduled for Sunday when rains washed out the Saturday night start, and the race was won by Chris, his first-ever victory at the red clay half-mile.

The late summer rendition of this year's race was rained out twice: once on Saturday and again on Sunday. Precipitation stopped Saturday's program early on, and even though the track accelerated the rescheduled Sunday program in preparation for more wet stuff, it wasn't enough. As the main lined up, the clouds again sent everyone scurrying for cover, and the organizers had no choice but to cancel.

A single point was added to each rider's total who made the main, and purse was paid out on heat finishes, with Chris getting the third-place share for his heat performance.

"We got everything in but the main event, so it was okay. Heat race went well. We didn't have qualifying heats today, because they wanted to run an accelerated program, which was good considering the threat of weather. We wanted to get the program in for the fans.

"Things got going, things went well in practice. I had everything dialed in pretty good, we felt. Got off the line second in my heat race and battled with (Bryan) Bigelow for about a lap and a half. I got by him and was able to stretch a lead. Then I was able to start to experiment with lines in the second half of the race and try and find out what the bike did in certain areas of the racetrack. It felt pretty good just about everywhere. I think the experimentation might have cost me a little bit in time, and I might have been second fastest - I don't know if I would have been as fast as Will (Davis, fast qualifier.) We had some really, really good laps early in the race, compared to what the other guys were running, so we felt confident going into the main event. We were going to be tough to beat and had a real good chance of winning it tonight.

"Everything went good through the heats and semis - it spit on and off a couple of times - then when the main event came around, as soon as we were getting ready to roll out on the racetrack, she opened up and said, "You're done! Go home, boys." So that's what we're doing. We're going home.

"I wanted to thank the people at Hagerstown Speedway for doing everything they can to get us a race in. They've been bitten by rain twice this year, yet they still managed to be able to give us a paycheck. They did everything they did to get the race in, not only for us, but for the fans. I think they ought to be applauded. There's a lot of promoters out there that wouldn't go that extra mile and do that. Twice this year, they've had to run on Sunday, I think we riders appreciate the fact that we got a chance to get a paycheck."
