Carr Takes F-USA Pro Singles Opener in Houston on VOR Machine.

Riding a previously unproven motorcycle against the nation's toughest competition, Chris Carr took a convincing win in the opening round of the Formula USA Dirt Track Series at Houston Raceway Park Saturday night.

VOR is small Italian motorcycle manufacturer known for its racing-oriented motocross and supermotard machines. The company had been displaying Jeff McPherson's C&J-framed dirt tracker at the dealer show this year, and Chris and the Ford QCCPOV team had discussed the possibility with VOR USA of racing the one-off mount at some events in 2002. Talk became reality, and team engineer extraordinaire Kenny Tolbert worked tirelessly to get the bike ready this week.

All the hard work paid off. With a qualifying time over half-a-second faster than the rest of the field, the VOR proved to be unstoppable and Carr roosted away from the field to take the win in the main event by a big margin.

The team plans to contest next weekend's F-USA round on the exotic Italian single-cylinder as well.

"We smoked 'em. We got that flat tracker out of the Indy Trade Show. We told them, 'Let's parade it around a racetrack instead of these shows.'

"It was the first National win of any kind for VOR in the United States. They're pretty pumped up.

"We had been planning this since before Daytona, right after the Indy Trade Show. We had talked with VOR during the show and had discussed with them giving their bike a try, and we arranged for them to put a 450 motor in the flat track chassis that they had been taking around to the trade show for the last couple of years.

"So they got a 450 motor together for us, handed us the bike, and Kenny started working on it this Monday, built a new exhaust system for it, we changed a few pieces out, did some dyno tuning, got the power more useable for dirt track purposes, and violá! We had a weapon on Saturday night. It was cool.

"The next race is at the Devil's Bowl in Mesquite, Texas, which is about an hour-and-a-half from here. We're basically testing a new motorcycle and it's working out with flying colors. The bike's looking good, and we're looking forward to going out there and being competitive again this weekend."
