An Amazing Five Straight at the Springfield Mile

Coming into the Sunday afternoon event at the Springfield Mile, Chris Carr had established an almost unheard of win streak that numbered four consecutive races at the Illinois State Fairgrounds oval. Pushing that streak to five was unlikely, but if anyone was capable of doing it...

...Carr was, taking the checkers only inches in front of Rich King and Shaun Russell after a classic Springfield draft-fest that had the fans on their feet for nearly every lap. After a study of the finish line camera, it was determind that Carr was to stand atop the podium again, and he did so with a healthy 39-point lead in the title chase with just four events left.

"The day started off pretty good. The racetrack was in really good condition - it was fast early on. I guess in the first practice, a handful of us were doing some 106 mile an hour laps. Thirty-three-eights and nines are pretty quick around Springfield. I think everybody was excited to get on a mile again - it had been since we were here in May since we'd been on a mile - so that was cool. Everybody got their juices flowing a little bit.

"I lined up in my scratch heat with Rich King and Rich and I had a pretty good two-rider battle for four laps and he got the better of me. Which was okay. We weren't overly concerned with it, we just wanted to finish up in the top two and move on from there. We used it as another practice session.

"In the first heat race, Kevin Atherton was fast qualifier through scratch heats, and he and I and Shaun Russell had a really good battle the whole race. (Bryan) Bigelow poked his head in there a few times and I caught the draft on Kevin coming off of turn four on the last lap and beat him by a wheel at the line, so we were looking pretty good going into the main event.

"Our heat race was second fastest, Rich King was had the fastest heat race by about three or four tenths of a second on total time. So we knew we were in the hunt.

"I got an okay start in the main event, kind of hung out in fourth and fifth for a while. Moved up to the front, never really pressed the lead all that much early in the race. I think I might have led one lap around lap eight or nine - I only led maybe six laps for the whole race.

"Just cruising around, trying to stay in position toward the five lap dash at the end. The five lap board comes out, and - man, everybody was going for it. The pace dropped about anywhere from four-tenths to seven-tenths of a second a lap and Shaun Russell was riding extremely well. I think in the last five laps I saw Shaun Russell, (Johnny) Murphree, King, and Jake Johnson. These guys ended up, along with myself, being the top five in the race, too. I guess we all had our stuff together for this weekend.

"Going into turn three, last lap, I wasn't really in the position I wanted to be in. I got into turn three fourth place, and Murphree had kind of cooked it in a little hot in third and drifted wide, and I turned down underneath him and got by him through the middle of three and four. Shaun Russell lead off of turn four, and King was behind him, and I had narrowed the gap on King. Shaun darted low off of turn four, and I think that kind of caught Rich off guard a little bit.

"Shaun had actually shook the draft for a moment there. I got a good run off of turn four up the inside of Rich and somehow, some way, the Kenny Tolbert horsepower carried us to the line and we won by about four inches, from what I heard, so it was a nail-biter. I think all five guys came across the line within a bike length of each other. It was definitely one of the closest finishes they've had there for many years, and closer than the last four that I had won, and it was certainly the most difficult to win, so we're real pleased with the outcome.

"I had set a goal for myself for this weekend to leave with a thirty-five point lead, we've got four bonus points, so overall it was a real good weekend. So we're happy."
