Unlikely Fifth for Carr at Peoria TT

The perennial favorite at the fabled Peoria TT, Chris Carr spends the week before the big race all over the area doing publicity events and helping promote the race, probably doing more PR before the TT than for any other race on the schedule. It must be working, as a huge crowd filled the hills around the Illinois track to watch Chris try and win for the fourteenth time.

Unfortunately for Chris, there were four faster riders on the day, and the Prince of Peoria settled for fifth. Riding his converted KTM motocrosser for the first time at this track, Carr admitted there were some bugs to work out, but made no excuses about it, and congratulated the guys who finished in front of him. He expects to be fighting for victory again in 2005.

"We showed up with every TT weapon we could think of. We had two KTMs and two Rotaxes. We looked at the race track and realized pretty quickly that it was going to be a futile effort to try and ride the flat track bikes, so we chose the OEM-based KTM. It was the first time I had ridden it at Peoria and we were kind of all over the map on gearing. We were competitive, we just weren't the fastest guy. That's the way it goes sometimes.

"I won my scratch heat, which was - I believe - fourth fastest, and I won my heat race, which was fourth fastest, and in the main event, I got fifth. It was one of those deals where we were pretty good, we just weren't as dominant as we could be at Peoria. We'll got to work and come back stronger next year."
