Carr Wins Scioto, Heads to DuQuoin in Command

It was entirely possible for Chris Carr to clinch the 2004 AMA Progressive Insurance Grand National Flat Track title at Scioto Downs outside of Columbus, Ohio on Sunday. Chris needed to be 46 points clear of Joe Kopp to insure a year-end tie, which he would have won by virtue of greater number of race wins.

As it turned out, Chris did everything he had to do, winning the race after capitalizing on a mistake by Johnny Murphree, but Kopp kept him ever honest, finishing second in the race and forcing the title down to the final weekend in DuQuoin. All Chris needs to do is make both main events and gather a miniscule two points to secure his sixth AMA title. The focus for the next race, a tiny indoor short track, will be to put it in the main event.

"We had a pretty good day. We didn't start off all that well in the scratch heat. The track was changing a lot and I didn't get a very good start, and I ended up a distant third behind (Jay) Springsteen and Chris Evans in the scratch heat. That put us in the fourth heat race, it was fourth fastest, out there with Springer again. I got a great start in the heat race, the holeshot, and Springer kept me honest the whole race, apparently he was right within five bike lengths the whole way around, so we had a pretty decent run. We were third fastest, (Joe) Kopp was sitting on the pole after winning his heat race.

"I got an average start in the main event, got about fifth into turn one, but came out of turn two in third, Kopp was out front and (Johnny) Murphree was running second. It was kind of weird at first, because we were a little bit concerned about tire wear, but Joe seemed to be going pretty good and Murphree was kind of just keeping pace, and I was keeping pace in third, and all of a sudden Johnny was all over Joe. It seems like he has a hard time leading some of these races, and Murphree was able to get a run on him, and got by him going into turn three on the back stretch. I sat there and had a pretty good view of that one.

"Just past halfway, I started gaining on the guys. Murphree was running out front, Kopp was trying to make the same pass on Johnny that Johnny had made on him earlier, and he couldn't quite make it stick. So, I'm sitting there in third, and I'm thinking, 'If I'm gonna win this thing, I've got to do something different than I'm doing,' because Kopp wasn't able to get by and I had pressure from behind from (Kenny) Coolbeth. So I went into turn three one lap and Kopp had been trying to go to the inside of Murphree, and he kind of checked up a little bit early, knowing he wasn't going to have any room, and that let Johnny kind of squirt away, and I drove around the outside of Kopp and filled the gap that he had left. I hounded Murphree for a couple more laps and I don't know if his tire was going away, or his motor was going South or what, but all of a sudden I was getting really, really good drives. I got a run on Johnny coming out of four, got a little draft going down the front stretch, and I kind of squeezed underneath him going into turn one. That was with about four to go, and we kind of ran our best laps from that point on and got away from the guys.

"So that was a good race for us. The crowd that came to see the event saw four guys running fairly close together for most of the race. We'll go on to DuQuoin and hope to put her into the main event on the short track.

"I'd like everyone to check out a real cool website some friends of mine have started, whitetailjoe.com. These are great people, and they have some unique products on there.
