FLEETWOOD, Pa., (June 15, 2005) - Defending AMA/Ford Quality Checked Certified Pre-owned Flat Track Championship series champion Chris Carr and the Ford Quality Checked Team return this weekend for the first time in more than a decade to the legendary Syracuse Mile in what should prove to be a burner of a race at the Upstate New York track.
Carr, who's been on the Syracuse Mile podium a number of times - including 1993 when he last raced there and was edged at the finish line by the late Ricky Graham - is amped to do well and extend his current points lead in the series.
"It's been 12 years since I've raced at Syracuse and I'll be one of only a couple veterans that are returning to race this year," said Carr. "This could favor a veteran rider, but some of the young guys might throw caution-to-the-wind - so this old dog might have to pull out a few tricks to pull off the win. So we'll see. I'm really looking forward to it."
In '93 Carr raced to two second-place finishes at Syracuse's doubleheader, the highlight of which was his race with Graham.
"I've got good memories from racing Syracuse," said Carr. "Though I've never won there, we'll be aiming to do just that this weekend."
Carr added that this year's Syracuse Mile will honor racer Aaron Creamer, who Carr calls a "very, very nice young man that epitomized how you can, with hard work, chase your dreams without a lot of money." Dubbed the Aaron Creamer Memorial Syracuse Mile at the New York Fairgrounds, Carr is proud to be competing in the honor of his late friend.
"Having a race in Aaron's honor is truly fitting for a young man who never achieved what he truly deserved for his hard work," said Carr.
Carr added that the Syracuse track, though fast, is also highly technical. "Turn three is it's signature turn - 130 mph into a portion of track that only about ten feet of it is worth riding on. It can reach out and bite you."
