The Ford Quality Checked Team heads to the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio this Saturday night for the traditional pea-gravel shootout at that infamous half-mile oval. Chris has won the race four times, most recently in 2001.
"Typical mile race- the day started out pretty good for us. We were solid in our scratch heat, won that fairly easily. In the heat race, I got a good start and got away from the guys early and brought that one home, with my teammate Willie McCoy running second. That was awesome, he and I both had front row pick for the main event.
"The main event comes around, I get a good start. The track had kind of changed a little bit from when I rode it earlier in my heat race. The line had moved down to the bottom of the groove simply because the ruts were getting bigger and deeper on the groove. We just kind of cruised around the first seven or eight laps and, the new started pressing the pace a little bit after that. I got back to the front around lap nine and diced it out with (Rich) King and (Jay) Springsteen from that point on. Things were going good, back and forth with those guys. I had a pretty good gauge at the finish line whether I could beat either one of them either leading or following. We were set up for the end. Somehow I made a mini break on about lap nineteen, put a gap on them, and, from what I understand, I put about fifteen bike lengths on the guys. Springer came back after me and brought King with him, and I had pulled out just enough gap to keep King behind me at the stripe by about four inches, according to the cameras. So it was a typical close finish, but it wasn't a five-lap dash, it was a five-lap mini break. It was one of those things where I got away from them for a while and they just couldn't quite catch back up in time.
"It was a good win for us, and I got to take Cale, my oldest son, on a victory lap, so it was cool."
Are you looking forward to Lima?
"I'm looking forward to Lima. We've always been pretty good at Lima, and hopefully we can back on the box there like we've been in the past, and have a good weekend and extend the points lead some more."
