Chris is in Sturgis, South Dakota this week, taking advantage of an opportunity to test some 2006 equipment at the Jackpine Gypsies short track events before the Grand National series picks up again at the world famous Peoria TT on August 21.
"I lined up in the first heat race with the two Suzuki boys, Jake Johnson and Kevin Varnes, after being on pole, and I got a good start and was running second behind George Roeder, and he about tossed it away coming out of turn two going down the backstretch - he crashed the thing three times, but somehow held onto it. That kind of slowed us down a little bit, but I was able to get by him during that whole mishap and it was sort of an easy heat race after that, we won by about twenty bike lengths or so and we were second fastest. (Joe) Kopp was on the pole for the main event. So we were feeling pretty good, the times were pretty good, and we made a couple of changes before the main event, to try and not have the same mistake we made a Hagerstown where we were good early and slow late.
"The changes we made, along with a lousy start, put me back about sixth or seventh at the beginning of the main event, and the bike wasn't working all that well. But it came around about lap ten or so and things started working good. I started to peel off some pretty good lap times and found myself moving forward. I was able to get by (Jared) Mees when he made a mistake going into turn one, I was able to get a good run on (Bryan) Bigelow, got by him going into turn one, and that put me behind Kopp and (Rich) King, who were dicing for second. Coolbeth had checked out on everybody. I was behind Joe and Rich for about three or four laps, and Rich lit it up coming off of turn four, Kopp went wide and I didn't have to slow down at all, and I was able to drag-race down the front stretch and beat them both into turn one, and that kind of set our spot for the rest of the race. I got them with about three laps to go, and we pulled away from them by about five bike lengths at the end. Coolbeth had gone to another planet somewhere along the way.
"Early in the race, it wasn't looking very good with Coolbeth leading and myself in sixth, but we came back and did what we had to do to score maximum points. We've got a five point lead now, so the race is on."
Do the remaining races suit you or Coolbeth?
"I've always felt that the races toward the end of the year suit me pretty well. There's two half-miles, a TT, a short track, and two miles left. Coolbeth has been red hot on the half-miles, and I expect him to be tough there. On the short track and the TT, anything can happen. We look forward to the balance of the schedule and it should be a lot of fun."
