Chris Happily Takes Fourth at Greenville

On a rough, rutted, cushion track that saw several riders unfortunately carted off to the hospital, Chris rode a calculated race that saw him finish fourth and retake the points lead solo in the AMA Twins class at the Greenville, Ohio half-mile.

After trekking home with the family, Chris flew out to Utah to participate in another test aboard the Dennis Manning motorcycle streamliner in preparation for Motorcycle Speed Week this September. Chris busted through the 300 mph barrier in preparation for his attack on the two-wheel absolute record, held by Dave Campos at 323 mph. The team is optimistic that they can set a new mark during official timing this fall.

How did the salt flats testing go today?

"Today went great. I had one run, and I hit 300.5 miles an hour. We achieved our goal, which was three hundred miles an hour. We made a forty-nine mile an hour jump from yesterday, and a fifty-seven mile an hour jump from the last time we were here, and that was only my sixth run under power."

Awesome. Did they make the improvement with engine or gearing or something else?

"They got it cleaned up. Mostly it was engine management, but we're at a point where we don't think we can get much more out of it on the salt, so we're going to leave here on a good note and go back, spend some more time on the dyno, get it running more crisp and clean, happier, and then we'll come back here in September ready to go."

What did it feel like going three hundred mph?

"Well, I only got it up to three hundred. The thing you've gotta remember is that when we come here in September, we're measured over a full mile and also a kilometer. You've got to stay in it. The idea is that you've got to accelerate into those two different traps to achieve the record, so right now, we've had a very short run up, got it to three hundred miles an hour in a very short period of time - today it was 2.6 miles - and I reached three hundred miles an hour. We're real happy with that, but we're going to have to make some adjustments - refine it for when we come back in September, and right now we can't make it go that much faster, and there isn't a whole lot to learn, a whole lot to gain by continuing to run it down the salt today. They're going to back to do some work and get it ready for the next time."

Talk to us about Greenville, Ohio.

"Greenville...after being out here in Bonneville for the last couple of days, I kind of forgot about Greenville (laughs). Greenville was a decent day for us. The track was real deep and rough and it got brushed off for the main event. I put it in the main with a distant third in my heat race and we weren't really in the hunt, but we made some changes for the main event, made the bike a little more comfortable for me to ride, and I rode a real conservative race and ended up fourth out of the whole deal, despite all the red flags. We just felt fortunate that we got out of there driving the motor home down the road - I felt real good about that. It was a difficult night with (Jay) Springsteen getting hurt (Dominic) Beaulac getting hurt, (Bryan) Bigelow getting hurt - we're just happy to get out of there with the points that we had."
