Fourth at Farley Keeps Carr in Points Chase
After a flurry of half-mile races, the AMA Twins Series takes a short break before resuming in Springfield during the Labor Day weekend. At the Farley, Iowa half-mile, Chris fought a mediocre track to finish fourth, while championship rival Ken Coolbeth took victory. Only two races remain - the Labor Day Springfield Mile and the Scioto Downs half-mile finale.
In the meantime, Chris heads out to Washington State to contest two events north of Portland, Oregon at Castle Rock, Washington, then treks thousands of miles Eastward for the inevitable clash of the Titans at Peoria, August 20.
"We were kind of disappointed with Farley -not just the results, I guess - in the end, we were kind of glad to get out of there - but it disappointed us that, in the third year there, that track was terrible. It's like they didn't even try to make us a good racetrack to run on. It was real rough and bumpy, and it was single-line, and it was difficult to pass, and those aren't our excuses for our finish or anything like that, it was just one of those racetracks where I don't think anybody had a whole lot of fun riding, and part of the reason we race is because we like to ride on good race tracks, and this wasn't one of them.
"I got an average start in my heat race, moved into second and was chasing down Tim Eades, and I caught him, but I really couldn't' do anything with him. He was running real good, a real good pace up front, I couldn't ever get a good enough run on him - without trying to hurt him - to go by, and it was one of those things where he did a good job, he got a good start, he ran a good line and a good race and we ended up second.
"Fortunately for me, it was the second-fastest heat, which put us on the front row for the main event, and I just kind of got an average start in the main event, I came off turn two in fifth, I ran a real low line in turns one and two. The track was way up on the top of the race track, so I just left it in third gear and ran the pee-wee line in the first corner, and came off in fifth, made one pass in fifth on Eades fairly early in the race and ran a pretty lonely fourth from that point on. The only guy that passed anybody - that I noticed - was (Jared) Mees, and he made ca couple positions and that was it.
"Coolbeth kind of steadily marched away out front, he ran a solid race with real consistent laps, and, I mean, I had some decent lap times occasionally, but I was not as consistent as he was, and I pretty much rode around, took it kind of conservative, tried catching (Rich) King,, made some headway late in the race, but ran out of time to be able to do anything with him. That was it."
