Ford's Mike Dennis said that the company is looking forward to Carr's attempt at the coveted record which now stands at 322 mph.
"We have all the confidence in the world with Denis Manning and his BUB streamliner program and look forward to celebrating, along with Chris (Carr), a new land speed record here in September," said Dennis, Program Manager for Ford Quality Checked Certified Pre-owned vehicles. "Setting a motorcycle land speed record at nearly 350 miles per hour is no small undertaking. The expenses associated with a project like this are incredibly high. So the Ford Quality Checked program agreed to lend a financial hand to Denis and Chris in their record attempt."
According to Manning, though it's not guaranteed, the record of 322 mph looks to be in jeopardy - especially when you consider the success of the practice runs the BUB/Ford QC Streamliner has experienced heading into the upcoming FIM Motorcycle International Speed Trials by BUB at Bonneville.
"It took the people who hold the record now five miles to get up to 300 miles per hour," said Manning. "Chris did it in 2.7 miles."
Manning said that once Carr hit that 'magical' 300 mph barrier (7/26/06), the team shut the streamliner down put it in the trailer and returned it to northern California. Once the entire streamliner was disassembled, the motor was Dynoed, Manning and his team put the streamliner back together knowing full well that they have a great shot here at the record in a couple weeks at Bonneville.
"Chris is the best and this machine is 15 years in the making," said Manning. "That's a combination that'll make history at Bonneville."
Carr's foray into the world of land speed records began earlier this summer with the BUB team, actually towing the streamliner for the first few times out at 60 mph behind a truck just to get the feel of the unique ride. Since then Carr has been back to the Salt Flats on a couple occasions, gradually making his way up to NASCAR speeds before hitting 243 mph early in July.
"On this final test we stepped it up," said Carr of his 302 mph effort. "The record's 322 mph and, ultimately, this BUB streamliner has the potential to run in the 330s (mph)."
